The satellite picture below of the ‘Inner Islands’ island grouping in Torres Strait shows the path of tidal streams and fast currents flowing between the islands and reefs.
TIDAL STREAM RESOURCE - Perpetual Clean Energy High yields and low costs from tidal currents are associated with - o shallow, in-shore, high intensity sites o located close to population. Such resources are found at - o channels, headlands and straits with fast tides (2m/s or more) o fast rivers (velocity 2m/s or more) o shallowing and narrowing waterways accelerate flows o regions with high tidal range and strong oceanic resonances. New high efficiency ducted cross-flow wing rotors - o allow lower intensity resources to be harvested o which are far more widely spread (near coastal populations).
